John Taffin Appreciation Banquet

Some of you may ask why this is posted here. It is because many of the parents may know who John is and have grown up seeing his articles in GUNS magazine, American Handgunner, and SHOOT! Magazine. He has enthralled us for years with his gun reviews and stories. The last few years he added a regular column in GUNS magazine called “Camp Fire Tales.” Amongst a variety of interesting stories, he has covered tales of his youth, the gun industry, and growing up around guns and the shooting sports.
John has taught his children and grand children about his love of shooting and especially revolvers. Yes, his favorite guns are six guns and his favorite caliber is the .44 Special. 
He has been instrumental in making sure that the next generation of youngsters have the opportunity to enjoy his love of 
guns and shooting. He is also a person you can always count on. John and his wife Dorthy are the nicest and friendliest couple you will meet.
He has also written numerous books such as: Big Bore Sixguns, Big Bore Handguns, The Gun Digest Book of the .44, Single Action Sixguns, The Gun Digest of Cowboy Action Shooting: Guns – Gear – Tactics, Action Shooting Cowboy Style. He is respected as one of the top handgun-hunters ever.
There is a celebration for John happening in October in Boise, Idaho, were he lives, and I wanted all of you to know about it. See the flyer below.

Marines host Interservice Rifle Championship, bring out top marksmen at Quantico in Virginia – By Gary Sheftick, Army News Service, Fort Hood Sentinel – WASHINGTON – Marksmen throughout the Department of Defense competed in the seven-day 53rd annual Interservice Rifle Championship July 6 at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. The winning competitors included the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, the South Carolina National Guard, the U.S. Navy Shooting Team, the U.S. Marine Corps Shooting Team, the National Guard Shooting Team and the U.S. Army Reserve Shooting Team. 
USAMU makes clean sweep of 2014 NRA National Pistol Championships – By SFC Raymond Piper, USAMU PAO – CAMP PERRY, Ohio — It was a historic performance for U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) shooters at the National Rifle Association (NRA) National Pistol Championship as Service Pistol Team members took the top three positions out of 656 competitors. Staff. Sgt. Patrick Franks claimed the coveted national title with a total score of 2649 with 147x (out of 2700). The runner-up was Sgt.1st Class James Henderson with a total score of 2649-131 and third place went to Sgt. Greg Markowski with a total score of 2640-127. To top it off, the USAMU won the overall team championship to complete the sweep. “I don’t think there has been team domination like this at nationals, ever,” Henderson said. 
CAMP PERRY, Ohio – Those who have always wanted to try their hands at firing a real M9 Pistol in a safe and relaxed environment are encouraged to attend our Pistol Small Arms Firing School (SAFS), held Monday, July 7, during the Opening Day of the 2014 National Rifle and Pistol Matches at historic Camp Perry.
The Woodstock Rifle and Pistol Club (#018011) held a CMP Rimfire Sporter Match on April 12, 2014. A team from the Proctor Fish and Game Club of Proctor, VT, took the high honors for the day.
The Junior Air Rifle Camps have been a staple in the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) summer program lineup for over a decade. The highly popular camps and clinics train high-school age (9-12 grade) junior shooters on intermediate and advanced air rifle marksmanship skills through various exercises and demonstrations.
4-decade career impacted thousands of shooters – The Bayonet – SGT. 1ST CLASS Raymond Piper, USAMU PAO – In a career that began at the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit because of her ability to write shorthand, it eventually became a job that touched thousands of shooters over nearly 40 years. Nancy Pool, program manager for the Army Excellence-in-Competition Program, retired Friday and was honored by friends and unit members during a ceremony April 25. 
Warhawks Battalion Sets Its Sights on National Competition – WTVY.com, Dothan, AL – By Courtney Crown – DALEVILLE — Daleville High’s JROTC took two rifle teams to the 2014 Civilian Marksmanship Program Air Rifle Regional Championships. Only the top teams from schools, clubs and organizations all over the nation were invited to compete in three different regional competitions in New Mexico, Alabama and Ohio. 
Historic weapons receive new life through Civilian Marksmanship Program – DVIDS – ST. CLOUD, Minn. – On April 26, 2014, Harry Sieben the Secretary of the Civilian Marksmanship Program, presented a plaque of appreciation to the Adjutant General of the Minnesota National Guard, Maj. Gen. Richard Nash. The plaque was presented to General Nash for his support of the Civilian Marksmanship Program. 
Piedra Vista High School’s marksmanship team takes homes honors at area competitions - Daily Times Milestones – The Piedra Vista Marksmanship team finished the competitive year on a high note. At the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s Western States Regional Championships in Layton, Utah, the PVHS squad won second place with a school record score of 4,301 during the two-day competition on April 4 to 5. 
Camp Hope welcomes hunters – Daily Journal Online, By Renee Bronaugh - Camp Hope is a place for wounded veterans to visit, relax, and be honored for their service. But starting this morning it was a place for those veterans to do some serious turkey hunting. A group of veterans arrived in recent days to enjoy Missouri’s spring firearms turkey season on Chris Neil Farm, the location of Camp Hope. During Camp Hope’s Open House on Saturday, the M1s for Vets Project presented William White, founder of Camp Hope, with an M1 Garand. Director of Missouri M1s for Vets Don Merrit said they help wounded veterans get back to doing what they want to do. 
USAMU accepting applications for advanced junior rifle camp – The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit is accepting applications for the annual Advanced Junior Rifle Camp. The camp will be held Aug. 4-8, 2014, at the USAMU’s Pool International Range Complex located on Fort Benning, Ga. The USAMU Junior Rifle Camp is an advanced rifle camp open to juniors aged 14-18. The camp will be limited to 25 shooters, and acceptance will be based on previous matches shot. This camp is primarily a smallbore camp. The juniors will receive coaching from the world-class Soldier/Athletes of the International Rifle Team, including Olympians, World and National champions. For more information, visit 
2014 Interservice Rifle Championship Matches – The 53nd Interservice Rifle Championship offers service rifle competitions for teams and individuals representing the Armed Services, Active, Reserve and National Guard, to include ROTC and Service Academies of the United States. During my indoor season, its easy enough to make ends meet with two different nights to split the team up. But with outdoor season upon us and 15 shooters moving to our outdoor 17
DCC’s first-ever Air Rifle Club had a memorable initial year of competition. Team members competed in the American Legion 2013-14 National Postal Tournament, where one of DCC’s 4-member teams placed 16th out of the 44 schools entered in this national event. In the same competition but for individual scoring, another DCC team member placed 56 out of the 155 competitors, again quite an accomplishment for a first year Air Rifle Team, according to Head Coach Bernie Snyder.
Rifle club competes in Alabama 4-H championship – The Anniston Star – Members of the Calhoun-Cleburne Hawkeyes 4-H Air Rifle Club recently participated in the Alabama 4-H Air rifle and BB Championship held at the Civilian Marksmanship Program range in Anniston. 
The 2014 Eastern CMP Games will take place 2-6 May at Camp Butner, NC. The Creedmoor Matches will take place 7-11. CMP SMALL ARMS FIRING SCHOOL & M16 MATCH: This course is recommended for all new shooters and anyone that would like to learn gun safety and sound target shooting skills, regardless of previous experience. In this course you will learn about safety, positions, how to load and clear the rifle, how to loop a sling and prepare for practice firing. Rifle SAFS students are required to use the Rock River AR-15 commercial rifles issued by the school. Personal rifles are not permitted. Ammunition will be issued for use during practice fire and the M16 EIC Match. Coaches will be available to assist students during practice and the M16 match. After five months of hard work and determination, the top junior shooters from around the country have finally met on the firing line at the JROTC National Air Rifle Championship at the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) Gary Anderson Competition Center, March 20-22.

As a break from the norm, more than 200 high school air rifle shooters have a shot at winning a “best-in-the-nation” label this week during the Junior ROTC National Championship at Camp Perry. 
Wagener-Salley rifle team wins fourth in region – The Wagener-Salley JROTC rifle team competed in the Civilian Marksmanship Program Marksmanship Center South in Anniston, Ala., and finished fourth in the regional match. Each cadet on the team received a medal for their fourth place finish. 
Junior ROTC wins division at shooting competition – By Jennifer Moody, Albany Democrat-Herald – Lebanon team qualifies for March nationals in Ohio – LEBANON – Lebanon High School’s Army Junior ROTC group won first place in its division this month at the 2014 Western Region JROTC Rifle Championship in Albuquerque, N.M. The competition was held Feb. 14-16 in three separate locations. Senior Army Instructor Mark Smith, who coaches the team with Nelson Shew, said Lebanon was the top scorer over 43 teams in the sporter team division for all three locations over both dates. The win qualifies the team to travel to the national competition, March 20-22 in Camp Perry, Ohio. 
Woodbridge senior on target – Matthew Albright, The News Journal – When Tyler Ramos needs to get in the zone, he cues the music in his head. “It takes the mind off the worry. Heck, sometimes I’ve even gotten a song I hate stuck in my head, but that can help too,” he said. That’s just one of many tricks Ramos, a Woodbridge High School senior, has learned to keep an unshakable focus. And those mental disciplines have served him well – Ramos is one of the best high school sharpshooters in the country. 
Local JROTC Cadets compete in the 2014 Army JROTC National Championships – Fredericktown High School’s JROTC Marksmanship Team, along with six other local Army JROTC Rifle Teams represented the Army Cadet Command’s 3rd Brigade at the JROTC Air Rifle National Championships. The championships were held at three Civilian Marksmanship Program sites: Anniston, Ala; Camp Perry, Ohio; and Albuquerque, N.M. The Fredericktown Cadets shot their matches February 20 – 22 at the CMP facility at Camp Perry, Ohio. 
Making – and hitting – her mark – Former Portville student earns Junior Distinguished Shooter award. A fancy for Texas Hots and buffalo wings is not the only thing Magdalena Ehmann gained from Olean. She also acquired a passion for shooting. Maggie, 17, formerly of Portville and now living in Stuttgart, Germany, with her family, competes on the Patch American High School Rifle Team. 
A shooter’s story: HTMS student 3rd in rifle sectional – Trussville Tribune – TRUSSVILLE – Anna Scheer, an eighth-grader at Hewitt-Trussville Middle School, has been hunting with her father, Kurt Scheer, since she was 6 years old. Now she has taken that skill to a new level by joining an air rifle team. Scheer has been shooting with Magic City Gun Club since April 2013, coached by Perry Mitchell and Don Trawick.
