Junior Shooters and Forward Movement Training in Idaho

Hi, everyone. As you know, we, at Junior Shooters magazine, care about kids and their parents and want you to have a place to go to find what is needed to get started in many different shooting venues. Questions are answered in our printed magazine and website about safety, guns and gear, protective gear, events, organizations and more.

What you may not know is that we also provide ‘hands-on training’ in Idaho for juniors who are part of our Junior Shooters team who want to be competitors at the MGM Ironman 3-Gun Match in June each year. Even though our training is extensive, we have been limited to providing training at a variety of ranges in the area.
Things have changed thanks to Forward Movement Training Center in Meridian, ID.

Forward Movement opened earlier this year offering a facility geared towards advanced tactical training for police, military and civilians. We met earlier this year with Matt and Christen, the owners, and found a facility that we could use for our training as well.

Forward Movement is a 17,000-square-foot facility with many options that are well-suited for our needs. There is a classroom that can seat over 40 students, open spaces where we can practice a variety of drills, and the best part is the VirTra 100LE Simulator.

The VirTra 100LE Simulator is a state-of-the-art training simulator that provides hundreds of different training scenarios with many of them geared for marksmanship training. Forward Movement has a room dedicated to this reactive laser training system. One wall of the room is a full screen where different video marksmanship courses can be run. The students use actual Glock pistols that have been modified using a combination of a laser and CO2. The result is that when a student acquires a target and pulls the trigger, the pistol simulates recoil and shots are placed where the sight picture presents them. There are simulated paper targets that we use that actually show where the hits are. This is extremely valuable from a coach’s perspective as we can see where the student is shooting and help them to develop his or her skills without using live ammunition. Other scenarios use steel plates and moving targets which can be engaged from a variety of distances. We have even developed our own course that we use just for Juniors Shooters.

We train our Junior Shooters to be safe and skilled shooters using modern sporting rifles, shotguns and pistols so that they may compete in well-supervised 3-Gun matches. The targets used are steel plates and simple cardboard targets with scoring areas on them.

Forward Movement Training has much more to offer law enforcement and military than we use. They have a 2,100-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bath residence. The house is fully furnished as if it were occupied including furniture, appliances, clothing, pictures and more. There is a bank that is outfitted with all of the things that make them look authentic. The bank has a teller line, computers, paperwork and cubicles.

The large Forward Movement Training mat room allows for various hands-on combat training. There is also an open area of about 5,000 square feet that we use for a variety of training classes. Many of these are line drills where the juniors learn how to move safely while manipulating their firearms and simulate shooting. Safety is the key and if you practice safety off the range you will be safe on the range.

Soon, outside the facility there will be several vehicles for training use. The vehicles include a full-size bus, multiple different types of sedans, a truck, and a motorcycle.

Forward Movement Training is the only facility of its kind within 500 miles.

Here are some comments from some of our juniors about going to Forward Movement:

Wyatt Irish (15): AWESOME! I love Forward Movement. This is a great place to perform drills necessary to be successful in 3-Gun as well as being a good place to meet up and learn your firearm’s ins and outs. Overall I love Forward Movement.

Once more in our new building and excited to be there. We started off with a short half-hour class, then moved on to doing some line drills to build strength and doing a little practice in the simulator room. I really liked that we did some line drills to get back into the feel of things and using the simulator as well. I also liked the fact that the class time was very factual.

Karli Wellman (15): Today we learned how to handle our shotguns. We also learned how to put shotgun shells in the shotgun. The shotgun is not really for me right now, but I just have to keep at it and just keep working with it, so sooner or later I will get used to it or I will have to deal with it. I had a lot of fun and I practiced hard. We also went into the simulator room to practice our aim, stances, and our grouping. The first round I didn’t do too well on my grouping. The second round I was a little better, but still not too good. Then I got to the last round and I only had one shot that was in a different place out of seven. On that last round I was so happy with myself.

Bryson Smith (14): Awesome! I love Forward Movement. What I couldn’t believe was that the simulation pistols (GLOCK 22 CO2 simulator laser pistols) cost $7,500 each. Also, I loved the buildings inside the building, too. What I really wanted to do was go through the buildings with the simulation pistol.

Jessica Brown (16): This Wednesday was my first time having the opportunity to practice with the Junior Shooters Magazine at Forward Movement. Practice is key in anything you wish to do, and as far as shooting and tactical maneuvers, Forward Movement is the perfect place. This Wednesday was very instructional and I learned some things I had never known before, and reviewed various basic, but important aspects of shooting.

Knowing your firearms is important because it can help on stages with different target sizes, distance of the target and weather influence. I learned about the ballistics of my rifle, pistol, and shotgun and about the different types of ammo for the best outcome in many situations. We also reviewed safety and sight picture/sight alignment and I had the chance to take a tour of the facility and try out Forward Movement’s awesome simulator. On a last (but very not least) note, I would like to thank Matt Schneider for letting the Junior Shooters team train in his facility.

Ben Moody (16): Forward Movement is an excellent training facility that allows individuals to experience firearm simulation without having to use live rounds. My favorite piece of training equipment is the VirTra simulator. The simulator allows us to check our groups more efficiently and for our instructors to adjust and make corrections in our shooting techniques from different angles.

Camp Hope welcomes hunters – Daily Journal Online, By Renee Bronaugh - Camp Hope is a place for wounded veterans to visit, relax, and be honored for their service. But starting this morning it was a place for those veterans to do some serious turkey hunting. A group of veterans arrived in recent days to enjoy Missouri’s spring firearms turkey season on Chris Neil Farm, the location of Camp Hope. During Camp Hope’s Open House on Saturday, the M1s for Vets Project presented William White, founder of Camp Hope, with an M1 Garand. IN MEMORIAM – Colonel Walter Walsh, Jr., USMC Ret., passed away on 29 April 2014 at his Northern Virginia home. At the time of his passing, he was six days shy of his 107th birthday and recognized as the world’s oldest living Olympian. Col. Walsh was revered as a true American hero for his extraordinary feats as an FBI agent, as a highly decorated Marine Corps officer during and after World War II and as an Olympian and Triple Distinguished marksman. His heroic actions as an FBI agent helped to bring down the infamous Barker gang in 1934 and the Brady gang in 1937. He was wounded in a shoot-out with the Barker gang where he shot gang leader Al Brady and one other gang member. He began service in the Marine Corps Reserves during this same period and earned both the Distinguished Rifleman Badge and the Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge in 1935. He was commissioned in 1938 and called to active duty in 1942 to serve in World War II. After the war he resumed his pistol competition activities and qualified for the 1948 USA Olympic Team in the 50m free pistol event. He won a silver medal in the center-fire pistol event in the 1952 World Shooting Championship to earn his Distinguished International Shooters Badge and become Triple Distinguished. After his active competition career, he served in numerous leadership functions; he was the Team Captain of the USA Shooting Team in the 1966 World Championship and the 1972 Olympic Games. Col. Walter Walsh, Jr. was inducted into the U. S. International Shooting Hall of Fame in 2013. The CMP extends its deepest gratitude for Col. Walsh’s extraordinary service to this country and its sincere condolences to his family.

IN MEMORIAM – JAMES E. "JIMMIE" STEVENS passed away in Nashville, Tennessee on 29 March 2014 at the age of 88. Stevens was a lifelong junior shooting leader in the Nashville area. He coached the Montgomery Bell Academy rifle team for 25 years and was instrumental in founding several other junior shooting clubs. He served on the NRA Board of Directors for many years. Stevens was a professional engineer who founded his own construction company. He became a nationally-recognized expert in shooting range design; he designed the MBA rifle range and made his engineering expertise available to many shooting clubs by assisting them in designing their ranges. The CMP expresses its condolences to the Stevens family and its gratitude for Jimmie Stevens’ contributions to the development of junior shooting and shooting ranges.

Updated Distinguished Shooter Program Posted. An updated version of A Short History of the Distinguished Shooter Program has just been posted on the CMP website. This 41-page document was written by shooting historian Hap Rocketto. It offers anyone interested in the fascinating history of the USA’s Distinguished Badge program a detailed and exceptionally well-researched narrative of its origins, history and heroes. USAMU accepting applications for advanced junior rifle camp – The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit is accepting applications for the annual Advanced Junior Rifle Camp. The camp will be held Aug. 4-8, 2014, at the USAMU’s Pool International Range Complex located on Fort Benning, Ga. The USAMU Junior Rifle Camp is an advanced rifle camp open to juniors aged 14-18. Eastern Junior Highpower Clinic & Championship – June 22-28, 2014 – In an effort to promote interest, education, and competition to the sport of Highpower Rifle Shooting among Junior shooters, a group of Junior coaches and Military coaches have come together to organize the 2014 Eastern United States Junior Highpower Clinic and Championship. The CMP Custom Shop continues to deliver on its promise to upgrade, accurized, customize and refinish traditional U.S.G.I. rifles. Custom Shop work also includes routine repairs and troubleshooting. The shop opened in October 2013 and while demand is strong, the turnaround time remains good, with about a 30-day backlog.

Breakthrough–Amazing Firearm Cleaner

A pleasant surprise!

I recently had the opportunity to try a new firearms cleaning solvent just made available to the general public. BREAKTHROUGH claims to remove all fowling from firearms.

I can tell you that it shocked me at how well it worked on an extremely fowled shotgun choke tube.

I removed a choke tube from one of my 3- gun shotguns after firing over 500 rounds through it. As I walked from my office out to my ‘Armory’ I had the nasty little choke on a terry cloth rag. I had sprayed a little of the BREAKTHROUGH on it and inside as well and casually walked the 75 feet to one of my benches. When I got there I opened up the cloth and the darn choke was almost totally clean without me even wiping it down! I pulled the cloth through the choke and twisted it a bit around the choke and in a heartbeat it was spotless. I am impressed!

I wanted to see what it would do in a 1911 barrel that I had just finished shooting 200+ lead cast bullets through. The barrel had some leading and as usual the top of the chamber had a layer of lead on it. I sprayed some BREAKTHROUGH down the barrel and then sprayed some on a nylon bore brush and ran it down the barrel about 30 times. I then ran a swab, moist with BREAKTHROUGH, down the barrel to push any gunk left out. I again was pleasantly surprised to find most of the leading removed with very little effort. I did the same procedure again and the lead was gone.

I hope you enjoy shooting sports your whole life. And what is #1? That’s right! Safety! Did you ever think that safety also is important while cleaning your firearms? I know you did but here is an important tip. Many of the cleaners we use are made strong so that all the fowling, debris, lead and copper can be removed. A simple way to protect you from them is to always wear disposable gloves while cleaning your firearms and components. I use Latex free mechanics gloves that I get at the auto parts store. I always ‘Glove Up’ before I begin the cleaning process.

And remember…never start without eye protection!

Nick Mowrer earns U. S . Distinguished International Shooters Badge

– Becomes him the 35th shooter to become Triple Distinguished

Nick Mowrer, who is originally from Ramsay, Montana, has been one of

our successful highpower service rifle shooters during the National Matches. Nick won the CMP’s National Junior Highpower Rifle Championship (Col. Bill Deneke aggregate; President’s, NTI, National Trophy Junior Team) in 2008 (1270-36X). After his junior highpower career concluded, he took up international pistol shooting and has trained as a Resident Athlete at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

As a director and coach of a rapidly growing junior rifle team, I have been struggling to get equipment to suit all of my new shooters. During my indoor season, its easy enough to make ends meet with two different nights to split the team up. But with outdoor season upon us and 15 shooters moving to our outdoor 17

position range, we will have to find a way to get all of them shooting prone and I had only 6 mats on hand (5 shooters already had their own mats). Prone mats range in price from $70 to $120 + shipping. I had to quickly and economically get prone mats for all.

CMP Club News – DCC’S Air Rifle Club Enjoys Successful First Year

DCC’s first-ever Air Rifle Club had a memorable initial year of competition. Team members competed in the American Legion 2013-14 National Postal Tournament, where one of DCC’s 4-member teams placed 16th out of the 44 schools entered in this national event. In the same competition but for individual scoring, another DCC team member placed 56 out of the 155 competitors, again quite an accomplishment for a first year Air Rifle Team, according to Head Coach Bernie Snyder.

The 2014 Eastern CMP Games will take place 2-6 May at Camp Butner, NC. The Creedmoor Matches will take place 7-11. The Eastern CMP Games will feature clinics, SAFS/M16 match, EIC Rifle Match, GSMM Four Gun Aggregate, Carbine Match, Vintage Sniper Match, CMP As-Issued 1911 Pistol Match, Military & Police Service Pistol Match, EIC Pistol match, and several other events! CMP SMALL ARMS FIRING SCHOOL & M16 MATCH: This course is recommended for all new shooters and anyone that would like to learn gun safety and sound target shooting skills, regardless of previous experience. In this course you will learn about safety, positions, how to load and clear the rifle, how to loop a sling and prepare for practice firing. Rifle SAFS students are required to use the Rock River AR-15 commercial rifles issued by the school. Personal rifles are not permitted. Ammunition will be issued for use during practice fire and the M16 EIC Match. Coaches will be available to assist students during practice and the M16 match. USAMU accepting applications for advanced junior rifle camp – The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit is accepting applications for the annual Advanced Junior Rifle Camp. The camp will be held Aug. 4-8, 2014, at the USAMU’s Pool International Range Complex located on Fort Benning, Ga. The USAMU Junior Rifle Camp is an advanced rifle camp open to juniors aged 14-18. NSSF Takes Over Rimfire Challenge Program, Announces Sponsorship and Partnership Opportunities

NEWTOWN, Conn. — The National Shooting Sports Foundation alerts potential sponsors, partners and participants that it has assumed administration of the Rimfire Challenge program—a national family-friendly, target shooting competition previously known as the Ruger Rimfire Challenge.

Now called the NSSF Rimfire Challenge, the program will continue using the format that has made it so popular: Providing new and novice shooters with a first taste of competition, with emphasis on fun, safety and mentoring by experienced shooters. In Rimfire Challenge matches, all levels of target shooters enjoy firing at steel targets in timed stages.

The use of .22 caliber pistols, revolvers and rifles means the Rimfire Challenge falls into the comfort zone of practically everyone’s budget. “The affordability of this program is something that participants really like and keeps them coming back,” said Zach Snow, NSSF’s Manager of Shooting Promotions. “Event fees are affordable as well. Altogether, the NSSF Rimfire Challenge is a winning program for participants, ranges, sponsors and partners.”

NSSF Rimfire Challenge is attractive to both sponsors and partners because of the existing popularity of the program and NSSF’s plans for adding many more matches across the country. After five months of hard work and determination, the top junior shooters from around the country have finally met on the firing line at the JROTC National Air Rifle Championship at the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) Gary Anderson Competition Center, March 20-22.

High school cadets from Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force JROTC programs earned their spots at Nationals after firing the top scores in the Postal Match in October 2013 and the Regional Matches in February 2014.

With the National Championship underway, the juniors are only a few shots away from concluding who will be named the best JROTC shooters in the country. Their roads to success have been well documented throughout their journey with the help of CMP, local media and other contributors. Though only a few can be named champions, all will be remembered for their tremendous efforts along the way.

Junior ROTC wins division at shooting competition – By Jennifer Moody, Albany Democrat-Herald – Lebanon team qualifies for March nationals in Ohio – LEBANON – Lebanon High School’s Army Junior ROTC group won first place in its division this month at the 2014 Western Region JROTC Rifle Championship in Albuquerque, N.M. The competition was held Feb. 14-16 in three separate locations. Senior Army Instructor Mark Smith, who coaches the team with Nelson Shew, said Lebanon was the top scorer over 43 teams in the sporter team division for all three locations over both dates. Wa-Hi shoots to regional win – ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Walla Walla High School JROTC Precision Rifle Team claimed the Army JROTC Western Regional Championship here last weekend. The two-day match, hosted by the Civilian Marksmanship Program, included 239 of the top rifle marksmen from JROTC programs in the Western United States. Wa-Hi’s precision team, consisting of Cadet Lieutenant Andrew Jenkins, Cadet Lieutenant Allison Juergensen, Cadet First Sergeant Sarah Jameson, Cadet Private First Class Daniel Enger and Cadet Master Sergeant Samantha French competed against 18 other precision rifle teams for a spot at the JROTC All Service National Championship in Camp Perry, Ohio, in March. QHS Rifle Team wins state – Quincy Journal – QHS Rifle Team competed in the State Championship match in Bloomington, IL last weekend. They won the state title with a score of 2280 out of a possible of 2400 defeating Iroquois West by 28 points. Team members and scores out of a possible 600 were: Matt Arnold (581), Keely Wagner (577), Connor Griggs (562), and Timothy Crabtree (560). Matt Arnold is the new state champion with Keely Wagner in second place. Last year Iroquois West defeated QHS by 1 point for the title. The rifle team has had an undefeated season with an 8-0 record. Leupold^® Custom Shop Introduces MOA-based TS-32X1 Reticle

BEAVERTON, Ore. – Leupold^® introduces the TS-32X1 reticle, a minute-of-angle (MOA) based system designed to allow for precision shots without the need for dial adjustments.

A heavy post and thin stadia crosshair features 1-MOA hashmarks on both the horizontal and vertical lines. Every other hash mark on the horizontal stadia is slightly longer, providing quick and easy 2-MOA measurements. Every four MOA is indicated by a number.

The vertical stadia is also set up with 1-MOA tics and longer 2-MOA marks. In addition, every fourth mark is numbered, all the way to the complete 32-MOA elevation range. Wind dots in the lower half of the reticle are spaced in 2 MOA increments, both vertically and horizontally.

This system allows for immediate and precise holdovers and wind holds as well as range estimation. The TS-32X1 is a perfect reticle to pair with riflescopes featuring ¼-MOA target adjustments or M1 dials.

The TS-32X1 is the first in a family of MOA-based reticles that will cover several magnification ranges.

This new reticle is currently available for most second (rear) focal plane VX^®-3, VX-III, Vari-X^® III and Mark 4^® 4.5-14 LR/T^® riflescopes. Existing riflescopes can be retrofitted for $159.99 through the Leupold Custom Shop. To add the TS-32X1 to a new riflescope ordered through the Custom Shop is $129.99.

Rimfire Rifles Designed to Accept Tool-less Locking System Accessories

North Haven, CT – Following the introductions of the new 20 gauge 500® FLEX™ and 500 JIC® (Just In Case) FLEX pump-action shotguns at the 2014 SHOT Show, Mossberg International is pleased to bring a rimfire rifle to the FLEX family of multi-platform, modular firearms. The FLEX-22 combines the versatility of the Mossberg FLEX TLS™ (Tool-less Locking System) with a fun-to-shoot, cost-effective 22LR autoloading platform. Now available in two models; a 6-position, adjustable tactical stock with 25-round magazine and in an easy-to-handle Youth model with compact stock and 10-round magazine. Either model can be quickly reconfigured, without tools, for a custom-like fit with FLEX TLS accessory stocks and recoil pads.

Based on the Mossberg International line of 22LR autoloaders (702 Plinkster®/715T™), FLEX-22 rifles come standard with free-floating barrels with a 1:16 twist rate; fully-adjustable front and rear fiber optics sights (adjustable for windage and elevation); durable synthetic stocks with stippled forends for more positive grip; complementing blue metal finishes; last-shot, hold-open design; and optional 10-round or 25-round detachable magazines.

The FLEX TLS System is the ultimate, adaptable platform with its patented series of connectors that allow stocks, recoil pads and forends (FLEX shotguns only) to be reconfigured for individual, custom-like fit or for specific use. Stocks can be interchanged with the simple lift and turn of the TLS latch on the receiver; remove the stock and slide the replacement stock onto the connector. Once aligned, simply turn the TLS latch 90 degrees clockwise and close the latch, locking the stock firmly in place. Recoil pads can easily be switched from large, medium or small (3/4 – 1 1/5 inches) with the TLS release buttons located on stocks; when depressed. The FLEX-22 easily accepts all FLEX TLS stocks and recoil pads.

FLEX-22 Autoloading Rifles – The 25-round model features the 6-position FLEX tactical stock with length-of-pull (LOP) adjustments from 11 to 14 inches, controlled by the integrated lever; shorter 16 1/2-inch barrel with A2-style muzzlebrake for reduced muzzle jump; top-mounted, removable Picatinny rail for ease of adding optics; and handy magazine loading cap (37064). The Youth version features the FLEX compact, fixed LOP stock (12 1/2 inches) combined with the compact (3/4 inch) recoil pad; 18-inch barrel length; dovetailed receiver that accepts 3/8-inch scope mounts; and 10-round magazine (37063). Shoppers Watch as Shooters Compete at Bass Pro 600

The Tracker Boat section of the Bass Pro Shop of Leeds, AL, has been an area of changing scenery over the last few weeks. At Christmas, the windows were frosted to create a Winter Wonderland where Santa listened to what children wanted underneath their trees. Hosted by the North East Independent School District in San Antonio, TX, The All-Service JROTC State Championship saw 96 sporter and 37 precision competitors over two days and five relays. CMP Club Annual Reports. CMP Affiliated Clubs, State Associations and MOUs are encouraged to visit http://www.thecmp.org/Clubs/AnnualReports.htm to complete an annual Club Renewal and Activity Report to renew their affiliation with the CMP. The Club Activity Report requests current data about CMP Affiliated Clubs and information about the club’s activities during the calendar year 2013. Information reported is used to determine the organization’s eligibility for CMP programs as well as to evaluate and develop CMP programs. 2014 Club Renewal and Activity Reports are due no later than April 1, 2014.

Women Coach Survey. USA Shooting and several partner/allied organizations are interested in growing the number of women coaches in our shooting sports. NRA Certified Range Safety Officer Course offered at Linden Sportsmen Club (Linden, MI). For those of us that shoot competitively, we know that it is always "Safety First, Last and Always". A NRA Certified "Range Safety Officer" one-day class is scheduled February 1, at the Linden Sportsmen Club. This first class is open to LSC Members only and the initial cost will cover instruction and materials for the class. Upon completion, students will be required to contact the NRA and pay their fee for final certification. CMP Marksmanship Centers

Tuesday & Thursday Evenings

The Marksmanship Centers will be closed December 24, 26 and 31.

Shooters, including aspiring new shooters, adult and youth, who live in the Camp Perry, Ohio area or Anniston, Alabama area are invited to take advantage of the opportunity to do practice shooting at the Marksmanship Center air gun ranges. Both 80-point, 10-meter air gun ranges are fully equipped with electronic targets that accommodate air rifle, air pistol or National Match Air Rifle shooting. Rental equipment is available for a small fee.
