John Taffin Appreciation Banquet

02 Some of you may ask why this is posted here. It is because many of the parents may know who John is and have grown up seeing his articles in GUNS magazine, American Handgunner, and SHOOT! Magazine. He has enthralled us for years with his gun reviews and stories. The last few years he added a regular column in GUNS magazine called “Camp Fire Tales.” Amongst a variety of interesting stories, he has covered tales of his youth, the gun industry, and growing up around guns and the shooting sports.

John has taught his children and grand children about his love of shooting and especially revolvers. Yes, his favorite guns are six guns and his favorite caliber is the .44 Special. IMG_4957 He has been instrumental in making sure that the next generation of youngsters have the opportunity to enjoy his love of IMG_4958 IMG_4960
guns and shooting. He is also a person you can always count on. John and his wife Dorthy are the nicest and friendliest couple you will meet.

He has also written numerous books such as:    Big Bore Sixguns, Big Bore Handguns, The Gun Digest Book of the .44, Single Action Sixguns, The Gun Digest of Cowboy Action Shooting: Guns – Gear – Tactics, Action Shooting Cowboy Style. He is respected as one of the top handgun-hunters ever.

There is a celebration for John happening in October in Boise, Idaho, were he lives, and I wanted all of you to know about it. See the flyer below.

Ding-Go Coatings: Custom Cerakote Camouflage

Posted By on July 6, 2014

Coatings By: Dave Furney

I was attending a local gun show in Boise when I noticed an unusual camouflage pattern on a Modern Sporting Rifle (MSR-AR.) I stopped and started talking with the young man behind the table. His name is Paul Zarneke, and he owns Ding-Go Coatings in Garden City, Idaho.

I commented on his work and that I really liked the pattern he had done. I asked what he called it, and he said it was his “Zarneke Process” camo pattern. He stated that no two were exactly the same. Inquiring, I asked what he used for the coating. He said he uses Cerakote products exclusively.

LAR08 Cerakote rcvr right side (Rock River Arms LAR-08, Varmint A4 .223 with Alpen 4-16X scope, Magpul Grip and trigger guard, Vikings Tactical VTAC II sling)

I told him my name and that I’m on staff with Junior Shooters magazine. If he was interested, I would like to do an article on his work. Paul said that would be great as he was just starting this side of his auto body shop business. I went and found Andy Fink (magazine publisher/editor-in-chief) who was there at the show also. We returned to the table, and I introduced him to Paul. Paul said that he would do one of our guns for us to be featured in an article. We discussed a time to meet later and set up a meeting for the following Monday.

On Monday we met with Paul at his shop. We finalized plans, and Andy said he wanted to do his RRA LAR-8 .308/  26” Varmint rifle in the brown pattern. Paul stated he needed the gun completely disassembled as he coats each part. This includes cleaning in the ultrasonic machine, media blasting, and the coating process. Boy, that’s a lot of parts. He also did the scope and Warne mount, Magpul Mbus sights, 45-degree side mounts, bipod, two magazines, and the VTAC, sling. The bipod, sling, and Magpul sights are available from Brownells.

LAR08 Cerakote full gun right side snow 1 EDITED So the next day I disassembled the rifle and delivered all the parts and pieces to him. He stated that he needed a few days. I was totally surprised when he called me a few days later and said to come get it. Wow, that was a fast turnaround for the amount of work that had to be done. The barrel was painted in air-cure Cerakote, so it needed to cure for a few days. I was able to put the upper and lower receivers together right away. (That’s the great thing about oven-cure Cerakote; you can assemble immediately.) I gave the barrel a week to cure and did the final assembly.

As you can see from the pictures, there is a complete transformation. I can’t wait for the weather to change so we can sight it in with the new Alpen 4-16X Apex scope that they sent us for this project. Also, thanks to Warne mounts, Magpul, and Brownells for their generous help with parts for this project!

Paul is an FFL license holder and can disassemble and assemble your firearm. He also does any coating configuration you could want, single to multi colors. Use your imagination or his.

North Haven, CT – O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc, throughout the company’s 95-year history, has been a leader in the development and design of firearms for younger and small-statured shooters and promoting responsible gun ownership and safety training for all gun owners. In the recently-launched Mossberg 2014 Youth Catalog, 45 shotguns, rimfire and centerfire rifles feature the company’s innovative EZ-Reach™ forends (pump-action shotguns), Super Bantam™ stock spacer adjustment system (shotguns and rifles) and Mossberg’s ground-breaking FLEX™ TLS™ (Tool-less Locking System). Adding these dimensional design features provides for proper fit and balance for younger shooters or individuals who require more compact firearms with shorter lengths-of-pull (LOP). To view the complete catalog online, please visit http://catalogs.mossberg.com/2014_Youth/.

7 Mossberg specifically-designs their Youth, Bantam and Super Bantam firearms to dimensionally fit smaller-statured shooters; not by simply shortening the LOP. The EZ-Reach forends on Mossberg’s pump-action shotguns are located closer to the receiver so cycling is easier with shorter arms and reduced grip size, combined with shorter LOPs, improve comfort and control. With their innovative Super Bantam spacer system on shotguns and rifles, a 1-inch spacer can be easily added to increase the LOP as your young shooter grows. Overall, reduced dimensions with shorter barrel lengths provide proper balance and lighter weight for more enjoyable shooting.

Time afield and at the range, with equipment that fits and with the proper training, can lead to a lifetime of enjoyment of our hunting and recreational shooting heritage. With a focus on safety, Mossberg provides a gun-locking device with each firearm sold; includes safe gun-handling messages and the 10 Commandments of Firearm Safety in their advertisements, catalogs, owners’ manuals and on their web site; and works with industry-partners, like the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the International Hunter Education Association (IHEA) to promote firearms education and awareness programs. And Mossberg proudly provides the firearms training sets for IHEA’s hunter safety courses. Everyone should have a role in responsible gun ownership and safe storage. Everyone should have a role in responsible gun ownership and safe storage.

Photo 1 Abbigail with Turkey “Mossberg’s focus, throughout the company’s history, has remained on providing exceptional quality and value-added features to our firearms, for hunters and shooters of all ages, while promoting safe gun-handling,” commented Iver Mossberg, CEO. “Introducing a young or new shooter to recreational shooting or hunting provides an opportunity to teach discipline, responsibility, sportsmanship and a respect for the outdoors. And with firearms that fit properly, the shooting sports can provide years of enjoyment.”

To learn more about firearms safety and training, Mossberg urges you to locate an organization in your area (the NRA, IHEA, 4-H Clubs, the Boy Scouts of America and various competitive gun clubs or organizations) for age-appropriate educational and safety courses. Junior Shooters and Forward Movement Training in Idaho

Posted By on June 19, 2014

By: Mike Sacks and JuniorsForward Moement background

Hi, everyone. As you know, we, at Junior Shooters magazine, care about kids and their parents and want you to have a place to go to find what is needed to get started in many different shooting venues. Questions are answered in our printed magazine and website about safety, guns and gear, protective gear, events, organizations and more.

Andy simulator with Ben left hand What you may not know is that we also provide ‘hands-on training’ in Idaho for juniors who are part of our Junior Shooters team who want to be competitors at the MGM Ironman 3-Gun Match in June each year. Even though our training is extensive, we have been limited to providing training at a variety of ranges in the area.
Things have changed thanks to Forward Movement Training Center in Meridian, ID.

Outside dojo and training area Forward Movement opened earlier this year offering a facility geared towards advanced tactical training for police, military and civilians. We met earlier this year with Matt and Christen, the owners, and found a facility that we could use for our training as well.

Andy going over gear with WyattForward Movement is a 17,000-square-foot facility with many options that are well-suited for our needs. There is a classroom  that can seat over 40 students, open spaces where we can practice a variety of drills, and the best part is the VirTra 100LE Simulator.

The VirTra 100LE Simulator is a state-of-the-art training simulator that provides hundreds of different training scenarios with many of them geared for marksmanship training. Forward Movement has a room dedicated to this reactive laser training system. One wall of the room is a full screen where different Scott instructing Reagan (11) and brother Ryker (13) 2video marksmanship courses can be run. The students use actual Glock pistols that have been modified using a combination of a laser and CO2. The result is that when a student acquires a target and pulls the trigger, the pistol simulates recoil and shots are placed where the sight picture presents them. There are simulated paper targets that we use that actually show where the hits are. This is extremely valuable from a coach’s perspective as we can see where the student is shooting and help them to develop his or her skills without using live ammunition. Other scenarios use steel plates and moving targets which can be engaged from a variety of distances. We have even developed our own course that we use just for Juniors Shooters.

We train our Junior Shooters to be safe and skilled shooters using modern sporting rifles, shotguns and pistols so that they may compete in well-supervised 3-Gun matches. The targets used are steel plates and simple cardboard targets with scoring areas on them.

House disde view Forward Movement Training has much more to offer law enforcement and military than we use. They have a 2,100-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bath residence. The house is fully furnished as if it were occupied including furniture, appliances, clothing, pictures and more. There is a bank that is outfitted with all of the things that make them look authentic. The bank has a teller line, computers, paperwork and cubicles.

Dojo The large Forward Movement Training mat room allows for various hands-on combat training. There is also an open area of about 5,000 square feet that we use for a variety of training classes. Many of these are line drills where the juniors learn how to move safely while manipulating their firearms and simulate shooting. Safety is the key and if you practice safety off the range you will be safe on the range.

Camouflage maze obsticals with various targets hidden Soon, outside the facility there will be several vehicles for training use. The vehicles include a full-size bus, multiple different types of sedans, a truck, and a motorcycle.

Forward Movement Training is the only facility of its kind within 500 miles.

For civilians, the following courses are offered.

  • Home and Urban Defense
  • Women’s Self-Defense
  • Concealed Weapons Course
  • Team Building Exercises
  • Women-Only Home Defense
  • Prosecutors at the Crime Scene
  • Crime Lab at the Crime Scene
  • Security Tactics
  • Bank Employee (Hold-up, Robbery, Hostage) Training
  • Decision-Making Scenarios (Shoot/Don’t Shoot)
  • Ongoing Weekly Self-Defense Training
  • Private/Family Lessons (Any Topic)

Please contact Forward Movement for Law Enforcement Courses or any of the courses above. The simulator room also can be rented out for private individuals or groups.

www.forwardmovementtraining.com

The folks at Forward Movement are great and we are privileged to be able to have such a diverse facility available!

Forward movement sign Here are some comments from some of our juniors about going to Forward Movement:

Gun Rack Collapsable Wyatt Irish (15): AWESOME! I love Forward Movement. This is a great place to perform drills necessary to be successful in 3-Gun as well as being a good place to meet up and learn your firearm’s ins and outs. Overall I love Forward Movement.

Once more in our new building and excited to be there. We started off with a short half-hour class, then moved on to doing some line drills to build strength and doing a little practice in the simulator room. I really liked that we did some line drills to get back into the feel of things and using the simulator as well. I also liked the fact that the class time was very factual.

Karli Wellman (15): Today we learned how to handle our shotguns. We also learned how to put shotgun shells in the shotgun. The shotgun is not really for me right now, but I just have to keep at it and just keep working with it, so sooner or later I will get used to it or I will have to deal with it. I had a lot of fun and I practiced hard. We also went into the simulator room to practice our aim, stances, and our grouping. The first round I didn’t do too well on my grouping. The second round I was a little better, but still not too good. Then I got to the last round and I only had one shot that was in a different place out of seven. On that last round I was so happy with myself.

Bryson Smith (14): Awesome! I love Forward Movement. What I couldn’t believe was that the simulation pistols (GLOCK 22 CO2 simulator laser pistols) cost $7,500 each. Also, I loved the buildings inside the building, too. What I really wanted to do was go through the buildings with the simulation pistol.

Jessica Brown (16): This Wednesday was my first time having the opportunity to practice with the Junior Shooters Magazine at Forward Movement. Practice is key in anything you wish to do, and as far as shooting and tactical maneuvers, Forward Movement is the perfect place. This Wednesday was very instructional and I learned some things I had never known before, and reviewed various basic, but important aspects of shooting.

Knowing your firearms is important because it can help on stages with different target sizes, distance of the target and weather influence. I learned about the ballistics of my rifle, pistol, and shotgun and about the different types of ammo for the best outcome in many situations. We also reviewed safety and sight picture/sight alignment and I had the chance to take a tour of the facility and try out Forward Movement’s awesome simulator. On a last (but very not least) note, I would like to thank Matt Schneider for letting the Junior Shooters team train in his facility.

Ben Moody (16): Forward Movement is an excellent training facility that allows individuals to experience firearm simulation without having to use live rounds. My favorite piece of training equipment is the VirTra simulator. The simulator allows us to check our groups more efficiently and for our instructors to adjust and make corrections in our shooting techniques from different angles.

At the time of his passing, he was six days shy of his 107th birthday and recognized as the world’s oldest living Olympian. Col. Walsh was revered as a true American hero for his extraordinary feats as an FBI agent, as a highly decorated Marine Corps officer during and after World War II and as an Olympian and Triple Distinguished marksman. His heroic actions as an FBI agent helped to bring down the infamous Barker gang in 1934 and the Brady gang in 1937. He was wounded in a shoot-out with the Barker gang where he shot gang leader Al Brady and one other gang member. He began service in the Marine Corps Reserves during this same period and earned both the Distinguished Rifleman Badge and the Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge in 1935. He was commissioned in 1938 and called to active duty in 1942 to serve in World War II. After the war he resumed his pistol competition activities and qualified for the 1948 USA Olympic Team in the 50m free pistol event. He won a silver medal in the center-fire pistol event in the 1952 World Shooting Championship to earn his Distinguished International Shooters Badge and become Triple Distinguished. After his active competition career, he served in numerous leadership functions; he was the Team Captain of the USA Shooting Team in the 1966 World Championship and the 1972 Olympic Games. Col. Walter Walsh, Jr. was inducted into the U. S. International Shooting Hall of Fame in 2013. The CMP extends its deepest gratitude for Col. Walsh’s extraordinary service to this country and its sincere condolences to his family.

IN MEMORIAM – JAMES E. "JIMMIE" STEVENS passed away in Nashville, Tennessee on 29 March 2014 at the age of 88. Stevens was a lifelong junior shooting leader in the Nashville area. He coached the Montgomery Bell Academy rifle team for 25 years and was instrumental in founding several other junior shooting clubs. He served on the NRA Board of Directors for many years. Stevens was a professional engineer who founded his own construction company.  He became a nationally-recognized expert in shooting range design; he designed the MBA rifle range and made his engineering expertise available to many shooting clubs by assisting them in designing their ranges. The CMP expresses its condolences to the Stevens family and its gratitude for Jimmie Stevens’ contributions to the development of junior shooting and shooting ranges.

Breakthrough–Amazing Firearm Cleaner

Posted By on May 2, 2014

By: Mike Sacks20140402_112933

A pleasant  surprise!

I recently had the opportunity to try a new firearms cleaning solvent just made available to the general public. BREAKTHROUGH claims to remove all fowling from firearms.

I can tell you that it shocked me at how well it worked on an extremely fowled shotgun choke tube.

I removed a choke tube from one of my 3- gun shotguns after firing over 500 rounds through it. As I walked from my office out to my ‘Armory’ I had the nasty little choke on a terry cloth rag. I had sprayed a little of the BREAKTHROUGH on it and inside as well and casually walked the 75 feet to one of my benches. When I got there I opened up the cloth and the darn choke was almost totally clean without me even wiping it down!  I pulled the cloth through the choke and twisted it a bit around the choke and in a heartbeat it was spotless. I am impressed!

I wanted to see what it would do in a 1911 barrel that I had just finished shooting 200+ lead cast bullets through. The barrel had some leading and as usual the top of the chamber had a layer of lead on it. I sprayed some BREAKTHROUGH down the barrel and then sprayed some on a nylon bore brush and ran it down the barrel about 30 times. I then ran a swab, moist with BREAKTHROUGH, down the barrel to push any gunk left out. I again was pleasantly surprised to find most of the leading removed with very little effort. I did the same procedure again and the lead was gone.

Very cool!

Glove Up!

I hope you enjoy shooting sports your whole life. And what is #1? That’s right! Safety! Did you ever think that safety also is important while cleaning your firearms? I know you did but here is an important tip. Many of the cleaners we use are made strong so that all the fowling, debris, lead and copper can be removed. A simple way to protect you from them is to always wear disposable gloves while cleaning your firearms and components. I use Latex free mechanics gloves that I get at the auto parts store. I always ‘Glove Up’ before I begin the cleaning process.

Eight Records Set By Osborn at CMP Championships 2014

Eight Is Enough as Osborn Sets Records at CMP Regional Championships
LAYTON, UT; ANNISTON, AL; CAMP PERRY, OH – Setting even one National Record is an accomplishment that many shooters strive to achieve, but few are able to grasp. Though many are satisfied when they finally have their names added to the record books, for a certain young shooter at the second annual CMP Regional Championship, setting one record just wasn’t enough. Or two. Or

three.

How to make a folding Prone Mat for under $30 with supplies from

Walmart

As a director and coach of a rapidly growing junior rifle team, I have been struggling to get equipment to suit all of my new shooters.  During my indoor season, its easy enough to make ends meet with two different nights to split the team up.  But with outdoor season upon us and 15 shooters moving to our outdoor 17

position range, we will have to find a way to get all of them shooting prone and I had only 6 mats on hand (5 shooters already had their own mats). Prone mats range in price from $70 to $120 + shipping. I had to quickly and economically get prone mats for all.

CMP Club News –  DCC’S Air Rifle Club Enjoys Successful First Year
DCC’s first-ever Air Rifle Club had a memorable initial year of competition. Team members competed in the American Legion 2013-14 National Postal Tournament, where one of DCC’s 4-member teams placed 16th out of the 44 schools entered in this national event. In the same competition but for individual scoring, another DCC team member placed 56 out of the 155 competitors, again quite an accomplishment for a first year Air Rifle Team, according to Head Coach Bernie Snyder.

John Paradis: Mr. Garand’s fearsome inventionGazettenet.com – By John Paradis – NORTHAMPTON – I would surmise that few school children in our region have heard of Jean “John” Cantius Garand. I suspect few adults, too. But if you are of French-Canadian descent like me, or you worked in the Springfield Armory like thousands of men and women in the Valley, his name means something. And if you fought in World War II, “Garand” is more than a French surname; it was the name of the most deadly weapon of its time. For an infantryman in World War II, it’s not a stretch to say that you likely owe Mr. Garand your life. Read the complete article.

NSSF Takes Over Rimfire Challenge Program, Announces Sponsorship and Partnership Opportunities

NEWTOWN, Conn. — The National Shooting Sports Foundation alerts potential sponsors, partners and participants that it has assumed administration of the Rimfire Challenge program—a national family-friendly, target shooting competition previously known as the Ruger Rimfire Challenge.

Watch the NSSF Rimfire Challenge preview

Now called the NSSF Rimfire Challenge, the program will continue using the format that has made it so popular: Providing new and novice shooters with a first taste of competition, with emphasis on fun, safety and mentoring by experienced shooters. In Rimfire Challenge matches, all levels of target shooters enjoy firing at steel targets in timed stages.

The use of .22 caliber pistols, revolvers and rifles means the Rimfire Challenge falls into the comfort zone of practically everyone’s budget. “The affordability of this program is something that participants really like and keeps them coming back,” said Zach Snow, NSSF’s Manager of Shooting Promotions. “Event fees are affordable as well. Altogether, the NSSF Rimfire Challenge is a winning program for participants, ranges, sponsors and partners.”

NSSF Rimfire Challenge is attractive to both sponsors and partners because of the existing popularity of the program and NSSF’s plans for adding many more matches across the country. Sponsors provide overall support to NSSF Rimfire Challenge, and partners support registered matches with donations of products. Sponsorships and partnerships provide many benefits to companies, including increased visibility of products to potential lifelong customers, enhanced brand loyalty and knowing that your company is supporting a program dedicated to building a positive future for the shooting sports.

Interested sponsors can learn more about levels of support for NSSF Rimfire Challenge by contacting Chris Tatulli at 203-426-1320 ext. 214, email: ctatulli@nssf.org. Interested partners can use the online form to sign up or contact Zach Snow at zsnow@nssf.org or Tim Norris at rimfiresteel@gmail.com or call 661-510-9379.

For participants, NSSF Rimfire Challenge offers categories for everyone: Open and Limited Divisions, plus Special Recognition competitions. More information on program equipment, rules, courses of fire, scheduled matches and the first NSSF Rimfire World Championship can be found at NSSF.org/Rimfire.

For host ranges, NSSF provides guidelines for match directors and incentives to obtain equipment needed to host Rimfire Challenge matches. Learn more at NSSF.org/Rimfire.
“NSSF looks forward to taking Rimfire Challenge to the next level of success with the help of our sponsors, ranges, partners and participants,” said Snow. “Participating in the NSSF Rimfire Challenge is a wonderful way to experience all that the shooting sports have to offer.”

2014 JROTC National Air Rifle Championship
After five months of hard work and determination, the top junior shooters from around the country have finally met on the firing line at the JROTC National Air Rifle Championship at the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) Gary Anderson Competition Center, March 20-22.

High school cadets from Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force JROTC programs earned their spots at Nationals after firing the top scores in the Postal Match in October 2013 and the Regional Matches in February 2014.

Their roads to success have been well documented throughout their journey with the help of CMP, local media and other contributors. Though only a few can be named champions, all will be remembered for their tremendous efforts along the way.
