CMP Supports 4-H Shooting Sports

CMP Supports 4-H Shooting Sports. The CMP annually supports 4-H Shooting Sports. Below are Thank Yous from State 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinators.

Successful 4-H Shooting Sports Coach’s Workshop. In March 2013, the Kentucky 4-H Shooting Sports Educational Program hosted another three-day certification workshop for teen and adult volunteers who wish to offer their time and talents to this youth program. At its conclusion, 119 volunteers were successful in becoming certified coaches. They will return to their counties where they will provide quality instruction and supervision to our 4-H shooting sports club members, ages 9 to 18. The workshops are offered twice a year for teens and adults who wish to become involved in the program or who wish to become certified in additional disciplines. These important volunteer coaches log in over 24,000 hours annually working with approximately 10,000 youth in seven disciplines. Funds to continue to offer this training are secured through donations from organizations such as the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). Our 4-H Shooting Sports program exists because of the dedication of these volunteers and the contributions of organizations such as CMP.

4-H and the CMP

4-H Shooting Sports remains one of the most popular projects offered in Oklahoma and currently has an enrollment in excess of 5,000 members statewide with more than 500 active shooting sports instructors. The goal of all 4-H programs is youth development. Decision making, teamwork, problem solving, being responsible and having high self-esteem are just a few of the many skills 4-H helps to develop to enable youth to be productive and positive adults in our society.

The 4-H Youth Development Shooting Sports Program involves youth who have an interest in shooting sports and welcomes them into an accepting, caring group. The first thing they learn is safety, quickly followed by discipline and respect (respect for firearms as well as respect for people). Youth are not permitted to use the firearm until they prove they can handle those three prerequisites.

Major Highlights for 2012:

* 12 State Shooting Sports Contest involving over 1,100 youth

* 6 discipline teams represented Oklahoma at the National 4-H Invitation

* 3 Shooting Sports Certification workshop

* Began research project to evaluate the economic impact of the Oklahoma 4-H Shooting Sports Program

* State 4-H Foundation created Dollar for Dollar Matching Programs, of which one is intended to provide financial support to teams attending the National Shooting Sports Invitational.

Funds received through CMP are used to offset certification cost and to purchase target and equipment utilized at state contests.

The WY 4-H Shooting Sports will use the funds to help support our state shooting event. In 2012 the event was attended by nearly 650 youth from all across Wyoming. They competed in .22 rifle and pistol, Air rifle and pistol, shotgun, muzzleloading, and archery in various categories contained in each discipline.

New E-book Teaches the Basics of Handgun Safety

Safety 1Safety is the most important aspect of teaching juniors, as well as adults, the joys of participating in the shooting sports. It is everyone’s responsibility and should be at the forefront of our thoughts not only during the teaching of shooting sports but also when participating in such sports. When you go the the range, each range has safety reminder signs such as:

  • Never point a firearm at anyone.
  • A firearm is always loaded.
  • Know what is beyond your target.
  • Never put your finger on the trigger until ready to shoot.
  • Always keep the muzzle pointed down-range.

All shooting competitions and ranges have a Range Officer qualified in range safety and ensuring the people involved in the shooting sports are conducting themselves in a safe manner. Private instructors also include safety as an integral part of their instruction.

A new e-book, Today’s Handgun Safety Basics, will help the hundreds of thousands of new firearms owners learn about handgun safety and how to improve their shooting. This handgun safety e-book features easy-to-understand language and realistic illustrations and is available for download at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and the Apple Store.

“With so many people buying a handgun for the first time, we felt it was important they have access to basic information about how to safely use and enjoy handguns,” said Kurt Kalkomey, president of Kalkomey Enterprises, Inc. “This book is ideal for new shooters whether they’ve bought a handgun for self protection or to use it for hunting, plinking or target shooting.”Handgun Safety Basics cover

Today’s Handgun Safety Basics e-book covers the following topics:

  • The difference between revolvers and pistols
  • Matching ammunition to the handgun
  • Handgun safety mechanisms
  • How to safely clean, store and transport handguns
  • How to load and unload handguns
  • Basic shooting techniques

“Whether or not your state requires safety training, all handgun owners have a responsibility to learn about safe firearms handling,” Kalkomey said.Handgun education can prevent accidents and save lives.”

Today’s Handgun Safety Basics is an excellent resource for handgun owners and those planning to purchase a handgun or take a class for a concealed-carry permit or license.

USAMU Junior Camp 2012

USAMU PAO

FORT BENNING, Ga. — Junior shooters from across the country descended on Fort Benning Oct. 26-28 for the Fifth Annual U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Action Shooting Junior Clinic at Krilling Range.

With the national champions in the sport’s pistol and multi-gun divisions among the instructors, the opportunity to learn from the best was a chance 27 junior shooters couldn’t pass up. “It’s a lot of fun,” said Elizabeth Peel, 15, from Montgomery, Al. “I always have a great time and even if you are already a good shooter you are definitely going to learn something new.”

This was the fourth trip to the clinic for Peel, who has been shooting for six years, while others were making their camp debut after recently picking up a gun for the first time. “I started shooting last January,” said Seth Clagg, 14, from Clearwater, Fl. “It’s great to learn from pros. I have never shot from the prone or kneeling positions and I am learning a lot.”

Six Soldiers from the unit’s Action Shooting section provided expertise and coaching for the junior shooters. Among them were Spc. Shane Coley, United States Practical Shooting Association open class pistol national champion and Staff Sgt. Daniel Horner, five-time USPSA multi-gun national champion.

Coley recently won the United States Practical Shooting Association open division pistol national championship and was once an attendee at the clinic.

“I love this clinic,” Coley said, who won his first national title a week prior to the clinic. “It is a lot of fun to work with these youngsters and pass on our knowledge to them.” Coley can relate to the juniors since he, along with Spc. Matthew Sweeney, another USAMU instructor, attended the clinic as a junior. Both were recruited to the Army out of the clinic after strong showings and a desire to be the best, said Staff Sgt. Lee Dimaculangan, camp coordinator.

“Traditionally we have a very young team and we are influential with the juniors,” Dimaculangan said. “I am the oldest of the instructors at 26 and (Spc.) Sweeney is the youngest at 22, so it is a lot easier for the juniors to relate to a younger group of instructors. We also use the clinic to assess the talent pool of the top up-and-coming shooters and see if there are any who may be able to make the Army stronger once they are a little bit older.”

After introductions juniors were broken down into small groups. They learned techniques on drawing, accuracy, transitions, reloading and had a short introduction to the rifle. They also received an introduction to Scholastic Steel Challenge, which is an additional shooting discipline geared to junior action shooters. The weekend concluded with a match.

“Most of the kids showed a huge improvement over the weekend,” Dimaculangan said. “They made leaps and bounds over just two days, which tells us that they listened.

“The best thing we saw was how instinctive safe gun handling was for the kids. It’s obvious their parents taught them the proper way to handle a pistol and rifle but they were comfortable around us and not nervous.”

The parents support was instrumental in making the camp a great event, Dimaculangan said. While the instructors concentrated solely on coaching the kids, parents coordinated lodging so all the campers stayed together. They cooked lunch and dinner at the range, painted targets and were timekeepers. The most important thing parents did was stay out of their child’s way and allow them to listen to their USAMU instructors.

“I brought my son because I thought it would help solidify some of the skills I have tried to teach him,” said Don Kester of Marshalltown, Iowa, who brought his son Jack, 14. “Sometimes parents have a hard time getting through to their kids and they like to hear from somebody else. These young (Soldiers) are pretty popular and pretty good role models. I thought it would be a great opportunity.”

No other clinic held in the country can boast having Soldiers, the current USPSA pistol and multi-gun champions, and a small instructor-to-student ratio all rolled into one. It makes for an ideal chance that junior shooters simply shouldn’t pass up, Dimaculangan said.

“This truly is one of the best things we get to do all year,” Dimaculangan said. “There is no better audience to promote to than the youth. They are the future of the sport and will shape the competition, shape USPSA.”

.22 LR Ammo For Your Semi-autos

ATK Ammo Federal, CCI, American Eagle

Getting the right .22 LR ammunition for your semi-automatic pistol or rifle may take some effort. .22 semi-autos are notoriously known for jamming. Each gun is usually very particular about what .22 LR ammunition it likes best. Getting ammo that won’t jam one-to-two times per magazine is important, especially if you are shooting in a competition. Junior Shooters magazine’s 3-Gun shooting team trains a lot using .22 LR ARs and .22LR pistols. This saves money and still provides excellent training.

(Photo above: One hole group at aiming point using Federal Value Pack .22 LR ammunition in a Tactical Solutions AR-22 Upper on top of a Cavalry Arms AR-15 Lower. The scope is a 4X Alpen using a WARNE RAMP mount. Photo below: A Sig Sauer 1911 with a Tactical Solutions .22 LR conversion.)

ATK Ammo Federal, CCI, American EagleATK, with its CCI, Federal, and American Eagle brands, have some of the best .22 LR ammo available that should work in your .22 and minimize jams. Many manufacturers recommend using CCI Mini-Mags. We have found these to work well; but have also had exceptional results with Federal Value Pack .22 LR. and the new CCI Tactical .22 LR ammo.

Boy shooting trapTo Expand Collegiate Shooting Programs, NSSF Offers Colleges $300,000 in Grants.

NEWTOWN, Conn. — To encourage collegiate target shooting at both varsity and club levels, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) is inviting schools to apply for a total of $300,000 in grants to be awarded through its Collegiate Shooting Sports Initiative.

NSSF, the trade association for the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industry, has awarded more than $650,000 to 75 colleges to help establish, expand and sustain shooting clubs and teams. Grant applications are available at www.nssf.org/college and must be submitted by September 21.

DSC_0013"Interest among college students in target shooting and firearms safety is growing at schools nationwide, and NSSF grants are helping to support the programs in which students can participate at whatever level they choose,"said Zach Snow, NSSF manager of shooting promotions.

Schools that have received CSSI grants include Harvard, Yale, George Mason, Purdue Ecclesia College, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, CalState Channel Islands, Pratt Community College, Michigan State University, University of Florida and Texas A&M.

Boy shooting skeetCSSI grant-supported programs have helped double participation at the ACUI Intercollegiate Clay Target Championship over the last four years. The 2012 championships featured 520 registered shooters from 59 schools, a 15 percent increase over 2011.

Snow reports that the ACUI office receives an average of 10 inquiries per month from parents, students and coaches asking how to start a college team and get involved with the ACUI tournament.

While competition attracts one type of student, recreational target shooting draws students who want an introduction to the shooting sports and firearms safety. NSSF grants are helping to establish these campus-organized clubs. Such widespread interest prompted NSSF to develop its "How to Start a Club" resource guide. The guide is filled with helpful advice on starting both competitive teams and recreational shooting clubs, and includes samples of membership forms and club bylaws.
