Rachael Heiden (Clinton, Mich.) may still be a junior category shooter, but that certainly isn’t reflected in her scores. Heiden competes at a world-class level and hasn’t let her age stop her from winning two international medals in the last two months. At the 2011 International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in Beijing, Heiden fired 73 out of 75 match targets to tie the junior world record. Despite windy conditions, she shot 16 targets in the final to finish with 89 targets for the silver medal. Yet, her most recent and lustrous accomplishment came in the beginning of July at the 2011 ISSF World Cup in Gaj Maribor, Slovenia. With 72 out of 75 match targets, she maintained a cool head to shoot 23 targets in the final for the gold medal victory. National Shotgun Coach Bret Erickson commented on her success of late as he said, "Rachael had a fantastic showing in Slovenia to win the gold.  Despite shooting in poor light, she put up a superb final.  She is a hard-working athlete and has made herself as a front runner for the 2012 Olympic Team."

Heiden, an Olympic Training Center Resident Athlete and University of Colorado at Colorado Springs senior, is no stranger to hard work. Heiden, who graduated high school at a young age due to advanced homeschooling, is only 20 years old, yet a senior in college. When asked about her Winchester Athlete of the Month nod, Heiden said, "I am honored. I can’t thank everyone enough for helping me to get to this point. There are still things I need to work on, but I’m looking forward to the remaining competitions this year!" USA Shooting would like to congratulate Rachael Heiden on a terrific ISSF season thus far and wish her good luck at the ISSF World Clay Target Championships in Belgrade.

MGM JUNIOR SHOOTER CAMP!

By: Molly Minute, reposted from Molly’s blog.

At the MGM Junior Shooting Camp last week, I had such a fantastic time that I want to share some of the highlights!

We had amazing instructors who we were fortunate enough to cycle through and learn from. Phil Strader’s stage was action packed! We learned about how to move to a target, while keeping our guns up. That way, you have your sights mostly acquired and you’re on target! It was tricky at first, but with the drills Phil used, we were pros by the end of the session! Some of you may be wondering what sort of techniques Phil uses to get his students to be so successful in their shooting. Well…I…ok, just look at the picture.

Cowboy quick draw? Or BJ Norris quick draw? On day two, my squad was definitely working on the BJ Norris quick draw. From what I heard, my squad lucked out; BJ had some of the junior shooters on full army march! One-two-three-four-DRAW-two-three-four. And sprinting. BJ recorded our average draw speed at the beginning of the class and then again at the end. We all improved! By a LOT! It’s outstanding to see what just a few hours of practicing with a pro can do! He had us work on hand placement when the start position is “Wrists above shoulders.” We had to think: Was that the best place to put our hands?

Manny Bragg (AKA Squad Leader Extraordinaire) started my squad on the first day. He was teaching us how to shoot something many shooters aren’t particularly fond of, (and not those squirrels in your yard) swinging targets! He told us so many great tips and let us practice the swinging targets over and over and over! That’s really what we needed! It gave us time to see how the swinging target moved and where our hits were going. We learned to follow it while it was on the move!

Manny also stuck with my squad on the final day and shot the match with us. It was a blast to have such a great shooter demonstrates stages then show us the different options on each. He walked us through the field courses and gave us great strategies. And most of all, he stuck around in the hot sun with eight juniors all day and we all had the best time! Thanks so much, Manny!

I’ve shot a shotgun, a revolver, .22 pistols and rifles. I’ve even fired an AR 15 a few times. But you know what I haven’t done before this weekend? Hit a target at 100 yards with an AR 15. Matt Burkett showed us the basics of the AR-15 for those of us (myself) who hadn’t learned anything from where the safety was to how to pull back the slide. Yes, I was that new to the rifle. It was really neat to be able to try shooting from different positions; standing, kneeling, prone. First I was nervous with something almost totally new for me, but by the end I was having just as much fun as everyone else, plinking away at those far targets!

Shooting a barricade can be totally different depending on the person. Some people can see over the barricade. Other people, like me and other female and junior shooters have to lean a little far over to see the targets. It has always been a struggle for me to find the best angle, the best foot position, everything when it comes to a barricade. Thankfully, there was an entire two hours where Max Michel taught us how to properly shoot around a barricade. Some of the lessons I had no idea about, such as sliding your foot to give you more of a view of the targets rather than leaning impossibly far! He had us doing fun drills so we could get used to hitting targets when there’s something obstructing your way. He covered everything, from how far away to stand to where to put your feet, to how to hold your arms!

Randi Rogers, a prior female junior shooting champion spent two plus hours with my squad! Not only a great shooter, she always has a smile and a hug! That day she wasn’t only giving out hugs and smiles, but giving us instruction on reloads! Reloads could be one of the biggest ways to save time on stages. Of course, avoiding needing to reload is the best option, but when you do need to reload it’s best to do so FAST! That’s what Randi Rogers taught us! As I was the only revolver in the group, she had to take a couple minutes to explain what I could do to increase my reload speed with a revolver. She even taught the group some IDPA reloads! That was really interesting to see.

At the end, she gave us time to ask her questions on any aspect of shooting. I had the opportunity to ask her about shooting one handed. She showed the group a great stance to take up when shooting with one hand. Put the leg of the side you’re shooting with forward (right handed, right leg forward) and lean into it while putting the arm you aren’t using to your chest.

By the end of camp, I felt so confident because of the wonderful instructors. But that’s not the most important part. Rhonda Gibbons of MGM targets is awesome! Thank you so much for all your hard work, Rhonda! From coordinating and lining up extremely generous sponsors, to your generous caring and loving support of all the junior shooters. The MGM Junior Shooting Camp is an experience that I will never forget! Rhonda is an amazing lady for her dedication to junior shooters and the shooting sport. I can’t wait for next year!

Need a Place to Shoot?

0611_WTS[1]NSSF’s wheretoshoot.org website will help you locate a shooting venue nearly anywhere in North America

By Tony Mandile

Just beginning to shoot? Traveling on vacation or business, and you’d like to take the opportunity to shoot at stationary targets or bust a few clay birds? Looking for a league that will allow you to regularly schedule some shooting time? If the answer to any of these questions is "Yes," an organized range that provides a safe environment is the ideal vehicle to meet your need. Sometimes, that’s simply a case of finding one nearby.

0611_Handgun[1]This is where to the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s (NSSF) wheretoshoot.org website comes into play. With a few clicks of a mouse, users can go to the Find a Range page and search the NSSF’s extensive database of thousands of indoor and outdoor shooting facilities in the U.S. and Canada. Best of all, each search can be customized in several ways.

Looking for a place in your state? No problem; just select the state from the drop-down menu and hit the search button. If you want something more precise to a given location within the state, a selective search using either a telephone area code or a zip code is available. It’s even possible to limit the results to within 10 miles or widen it to as many as 120 miles.

0611_Shotgun[1]The search function can also be fine-tuned to arms type by using an additional drop-down menu that lets users choose between rifles, shotguns, handguns and even archery gear. Or you can even look up places where instructions and rental firearms are available or locate retail outlets for firearms and related merchandise.

Each entry listed for a specific search result will provide the name of the range, city and zip code. If the mileage limitation is utilized, the listing will also give an approximate distance to every facility shown. Some will also show a "star rating" — the system the NSSF uses to distinguish the mostly highly evaluated shooting facilities in North America. The NSSF has determined these highly rated ranges consistently provide top-notch recreational experiences.

0611_Rifle[1]Once a list is generated by a given search criteria, the user can click on any individual entry, which will open a new page with all of the pertinent data for that facility. It will show the full street and website address, and contact information, including phone number and email address. Also noted are the services offered and what type of shooting is available. In other words, everything you need to know is either on the computer screen, which typically has a link to the range’s website, or a quick call or email away.

Another great feature of the wheretoshoot.org website is the Shooting Disciplines page. Especially useful for new shooters, this information source will help them learn about the various firearms types and the shooting sports associated with each. Separate sections are devoted to either the handgun, shotgun or rifle sports, and each shooting discipline is explained in an easy-to-understand way.

Scattered throughout the page are links to various organizations involved in promoting the shooting disciplines. By clicking on one of these links, visitors can learn much more about an individual discipline at the organization’s website.

Range owners and managers may also use the List Your Range page at wheretoshoot.org to add a new range or to update an existing entry.

In 2010, wheretoshoot.org had nearly 900,000 visitors, and this year the site is generating the same activity as more shooters discover this great resource. So whether you want to break a few clays, clang some steel targets or just punch holes in some paper, you can find a place at wheretoshoot.org .

Kelly Max_001USAMU set to hold annual Action Shooting Junior Clinic

By Michael Molinaro

USAMU PAO FORT BENNING, Ga. —The fourth annual U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Action Shooting Junior Clinic will be held Oct. 28-30 at Krilling Range here on Fort Benning. Champions from the USAMU’s Action Shooting Team, including three-time multi-gun national champion Staff Sgt. Daniel Horner and Pfc. Shane Coley, a former camp attendee and U.S. International Practical Shooting Confederation World Shoot team member, will be the primary instructors.

IMG_2349Juniors attending the clinic will learn advanced skills in drawing, accuracy, movement techniques, transitions and reloads. The first two days will consist of hands-on training with a match on Sunday to conclude the clinic. There is no entry fee associated with the clinic. A government-issued identification card is all that you need now to get on to Fort Benning—visitor’s passes are no longer required.

Rudy Project jrshooter web ad 7-01-11

Kelly Max_003Attendees must bring all equipment, ammunition, and provide their own transportation to and from the range, as well as all meals. This is not a clinic for novice shooters–those wishing to attend must be USPSA classified. USAMU Soldiers relish the chance to pass on their expertise to junior shooters who have the desire to learn and enhance their skills while having fun. Groups will be broken down to ensure the instructor-to-student ratio is the best you will find anywhere. “If it has ever crossed your mind to attend the junior camp, do it,” said an attendee from last year’s clinic. “Raise money, have a raffle, have a lemonade stand—just do whatever it takes to get there. The camaraderie between shooters and instructors was unmatched by anything else I have ever been involved in.” Space is limited. Registration is now open and will end on Aug. 12. To learn more about the clinic and register, please go to www.usamu.com.

CROSMAN CORPORATION Hosts Northeast Regional Field Target Championship 2011

Posted By on June 16, 2011

Crosman logoROCHESTER, New York, (June 15, 2011) – Crosman Corporation, long known for innovation and quality in the shooting sports, will host the American Airgun Field Target Association (AAFTA) Northeast Regional Field Target Championship (NERFT) for the second consecutive year.  The competitive shooting event is scheduled for July 8, 9 and 10, 2011, and will take place at the company’s field target range in Bloomfield, New York.

“We first hosted this event last year and it was a big hit among veteran field target competitors and those new to the sport,” said Mark DeBoard, Shooting Services Manager for Crosman.  Competitors traveled from all over the mid-Atlantic, Midwest and Northeast, and the 2010 champion, Harold Rushton, came all the way from Alabama.

Crosman Field CHampionship 2011

This year the competition expands from a one-day event to two days.  A one-day pistol competition has also been added.  ”Folks who are new to the sport are welcome to come out and participate in a single-day shoot,” added DeBoard.  The exciting Quigley Bucket Shoot will be back and should the winner compete with a Crosman-provided Challenger, they’ll take home a Paul Bishop Custom Challenger.

Sanctioned by the American Airgun Field Target Association (AAFTA), the event will be conducted according to the rules for the 2011 AAFTA Nationals. Ray and Hans Apelles will serve as Match Directors to ensure the event comes off without a hitch.  “The Crosman campus, located in western New York, provides for a deceiving field target course.  It’s difficult enough to challenge national competitors yet forgiving enough for rookies to feel good about their effort,” said Ray Apelles.

According to DeBoard, “This competition is a great way for shooting enthusiasts unfamiliar with the sport of field target competition to learn by participating in the sport.  Those new to field target shooting will have just as much fun as the seasoned competitors,” he said.  “Experts and world class shooters are eager to help guide you and promote the sport, and spectators are more than welcome,” he said.

Ray Apelles notes, “Field targets are constructed from heavy gauge steel cut into silhouettes the shape of small game typically hunted with an airgun,” he said.  “The animal targets have a hole cut out in the ‘kill-zone’ and a disc that fills the space behind the hole.  The only way to make the target fall is with a direct hit to the kill zone.  The shooter aims directly for the center of the disk plus any hold off to compensate for wind drift.  A direct hit will cause the paddle to rotate backwards and the entire animal falls over with a thunk,” he said.   The steel targets are re-set by pulling on the attached string.  They are placed at random distances, forcing the shooter to accurately estimate the range from the firing line to the target.  Each target that falls earns the shooter a point.

Anyone is welcome to participate in this shooting competition.  Beginning shooters through National Champions will take part and shoot alongside one another. The match fee is $60.00 per shooter and includes lunch Saturday.  “On Friday we’ll have hands-on, new product demonstrations and a tour of our manufacturing facility,” said Crosman’s DeBoard.  Friday also features the Quigley Bucket Challenge.   Rules: Best of 5 shots at a 1.75" bucket placed at 55 yards, 10-meter gun (6.5 ft-lb limit), Open and Iron Sights or non-magnified sights only. (Guns will be available for those who do not have the proper equipment but wish to compete).
