Tips & Hints of the Week # 9 – Feet Position

Posted By on September 23, 2009

By: Andy FinkDextrue shooting through barrels 2

Are you concerned about the placement of your feet when you get into your shooting position? If you don’t, you should. Feet placement are just as important as your body, arms, and hands. There are a number of reasons for this. First, if you are participating in action shooting sports you may have to move to another shooting position or turn your torso. You want to make sure your feet are positioned correctly so that you don’t have to take extra steps or make additional movements which take extra time. If your feet are out of position when you turn your torso then you may be tensing your muscles, or be in a shooting position that is not as comfortable as it should be. I have seen beginners shoot Steel Challenge in a stage where they do not have to move positions, yet, as soon as the timer goes off they reposition their feet. This takes an extra 1/2 to 1 second.

Winter Range 08Cowboy action shooting, USPSA, IDPA, and 3-gun events require lots of movement; movement that is either lateral, forward, or both. How you move and where you place your feet for your shooting position and getting ready to move to your next shooting position can mean a difference of 2-3 seconds per stage.

IMG_1131 croppedNow, you may say that you participate in a shotgun shooting sport where there is no movement, or in a precision shooting sport. Feet position in these sports is just as important. How you place your feet will affect your balance and make a difference if you can lean forward into the butt of the shotgun and maintain your balance comfortably, or are tense and using muscles you shouldn’t be straining. There are the same concerns in precision shooting but even more so.

 Duncan

There are usually three or four positions in most precision shooting sports. Standing comfortably allowing the arm and elbow that is supporting the hand holding the rifle without tensing the muscles means positioning the feet correctly and maintaining a balance that is conducive to complete relaxation.

.22 prone full length

If you are in a prone position or kneeling position and the feet are out of position you will tense muscles that should be relaxed resulting in more movement during your shot.

Take a moment to think about and focus on your feet position next time you go shooting and see if your scores start to slowly improve.

Anschutz’s Intermediate .22 & 8002 Compressed Air Rifle – The Perfect Beginning, Precision Smallbore and Air Rifle

Posted By on September 1, 2009

8002 standing real close up 1-2 rifle

By: Sarah Bowers (For Kids BY Kids)
Photos By: Andy Fink

22 port arms thighI am 17 years old and I?ve been shooting precision smallbore and precision air rifle for almost seven years now. I began shooting Anschutz rifles about three years after I started, and have been shooting the same rifles ever since. I?ve taken the rifles to state as well as national competitions all over the mid-west and they have held up very well to everything I?ve put them through.

Precision shooting is very different than any other genre of shooting. Instead of trying to shoot within a time limit like in tactical sports such as IDPA and cowboy action, you?re trying to stay as still as possible and take as much time as you need for each shot. Some shooters take as long a minute per shot. Obviously, there is a time limit. If there wasn?t matches would go on for hours and days! In International precision smallbore there are three positions; prone, kneeling and standing. In prone you receive ten minutes for ten shots, and kneeling and standing you receive 15 minutes for ten shots.

.22 and 8002 full ength of both

.22 standing head sights and hand and logo onlyAnschutz, through Champion Shooter’s Supply, provided us two precision rifles to test and use: an 8002 S2 Compressed Air ALU air rifle used for standing international & Olympic precision shooting and the 1903 JR .22 Long Rifle (LR.) intermediate smallbore competition rifle. The Young Marines in Boise, and the juniors in the EE-DA-HOW Long Rifles, used them for a while with great success in training new shooters and then I got a chance to perform some tests.

8002 left side of stockThe Anschutz Intermediate 1903 JR, and the 8002 Compressed Air air rifle are both great rifles for any young person to use. They have two stage triggers, 21.2" barrel, adjustable butt and accessory rail, and only weigh 7.8 pounds. Because they?re so light weight, and have shorter stocks than other full sized rifles, they?re extremely easy to adjust to fit the shooter perfectly every time. This makes them just about the perfect rifle for the beginning precision smallbore and air rifle shooter.

.22 Rear sight only

Since the rifles are German the sights are a little different than say a Remington or other American made rifle. The sights are basically the exact opposite of most rifles. Clockwise is down and left, where as on most rifles clockwise is up and right. Also, since Anschutz sights are so precise it generally takes seven to ten clicks (clicks is how we measure how much we change sights) per ring on an A-17 target. So if I wanted to move my sights up two rings, I would move my elevation knob counter-clockwise twenty clicks.

8002 TriggerAnschutz triggers are generally very light. Most precision shooters want their trigger to be as light as is safe. The goal is to be as still as possible, and pulling a heavy trigger could cause some movement, at least enough to effect where the bullet goes.

8002 Butt plate

Another great feature on Anschutz rifles is the adjustable stock. All of their newer precision models have adjustments for just about everything you would want to adjust. You can move the cheek piece to different heights, the butt plate to different lengths, angles, and heights

.

.22 target and ammo 2I shot the1903 Jr. rifle with four different kinds of ammunition. They all worked well in the Anschutz, but some worked exceptionally well. We tested the Super X Long Rifle High Velocity ammo, Federal 40 grain, Lapua Pistol King, Winchester and Super X High Velocity ammo. The one that had the best group out of all of them was the Select Precision ammunition, which kept a five shot group within the 9 ring on an A-17 smallbore target at 50 feet. Almost equally consistent were the Winchester Super X High Velocity and Super X Long Rifle. The Lapua Pistol King wasn?t quite as consistent, keeping a 5 round group within the 7 ring on an A-17 target.

Some things we look for in a rifle as a precision shooter is easy adjustment, consistency, and most of all accuracy and these two rifles accomplish all of those things very well. 8002 right side 3-4 gun 2They?re great guns for any shooter, whether they?re a beginner, a junior or an advanced shooter. Because of their simple structure they?re easy to use and adjust, which makes an Anschutz especially appropriate for beginners or junior shooters.

Airsoft is Fun & Practical – Get ‘Em Through Palco Sports

Posted By on August 27, 2009

What comes to mind when you say Airsoft? If you are a youth, you might think about the last time you went out and played airsoft games in the backyard or shot at targets. On the other hand, if you are not familiar with modern airsoft guns you might think they are toys. I used to envision airsoft guns as those guns that spit out plastic BBs that didn’t go very far and were not accurate; far from it! Many of today’s airsoft guns are strong, reliable, weigh as much as their big brother counterparts, and except for the blaze orange marking on the front of the barrel, look almost identical to the original they are a replica of.

S&W 1911 w-rail & 6mm BBsPalco Sports, one our sponsors, has provided us a variety of airsoft guns and products that we are in the process of testing and we will be covering over the coming months. They are a major distributor of airsoft products and we are especially thankful for their support.

Shooting airsoft guns can be fun, and it can be accomplished indoors or outside depending upon what guns and targets you are shooting.
 Safety Glasses
One of the first things to remember when shooting airsoft guns is be safe. At a minimum, always, always wear proper safety glasses and I don’t mean regular eye wear or sun glasses.

EricG

My view is that airsoft guns should be treated as any other firearm, with respect and care. Always obey firearm safety rules such as never pointing the gun at anyone.

Sig 552 right side 2

Today’s airsoft guns have high velocity, are extremely accurate, and powerful. Sig 552 pistol grip, trigger, mag releaseHmm, you don’t believe it? We recently tested an airsoft replica of a SIG 552 Commando. This gun has a velocity of up to 445 fps, can shoot through both sides of a soda can at 40 feet and can go through one side out the other and continue to 60 feet! At 15 feet, on a rest, you can set out a bb and hit it within five shots!

Airsoft 6mm BBsAirsoft guns have started to have a real impact on the shooting industry as a whole and that influence will probably grow. They can be used for training, practice, and just fun shooting, but you always want to make sure safety is the first priority.
Firepower rest target w-both sets of targetsTraining at home using special targets is an excellent way to improve your skills. Using certain types of airsoft guns have some advantages over others. There are a variety of airsoft training events and even airsoft games that have both pros and cons attached to them.

We will be covering a variety of subjects about airsoft over the coming months as well as specific gun reviews. These subjects include such items as:

Tips & Hints of the Week # 8 – The Mind Game & Going Through The Stages

Posted By on August 22, 2009

By: Andy Fink8002 standing real close up 1-2 rifle

Dextrue shooting through barrels 2A positive attitude is extremely important in any shooting competition. Think, I am going to hit every target, or, Every shot a bullseye, or, I can do it! Keeping this type of attitude really works and it applies to all of the shooting sports from precision air rifle to action type shooting.

Now, combine this with going through each stage, string, or shot in your mind before you shoot. Think about each move, the position of your body, the angle to your target, your sigh picture, breathing, speed at which you intend to shoot the stage or take the shot. This takes not only concentration but the patience to make your self do it every time. Almost all of the top shooters use these techniques.

Try these techniques next time you are out shooting and let me know if they worked for you.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (August 11, 2009) Amber English (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won the silver medal in the Junior Women’s Skeet event at the 2009 ISSF Shotgun World Championships in Maribor, Slovenia today and the Junior Women’s Skeet team of English, Ali Chiang (Redwood Shores, Calif.) and Caitlin Connor (Winnfield, La.) took home the gold and set a Junior World Record in the team competition.   The Junior Women’s Trap team also added to the U.S. medal tally, taking home the bronze.

English won her first ever international medal after firing a total score of 71 out of 75 targets to finish in second place behind Swedish shooter Therese Lundqvist.   Lundqvist captured the gold with 74 hits, breaking the world record of 72 hits, which was set by U.S. shooter Haley Dunn in 2005.

Natalia Panas of Russia earned the bronze medal with a total score of 69 targets.  Chiang finished in fourth place with 67 hits and after a three-way shoot-off for fifth place, Connor, the 2009 Minsk World Cup silver medalist, ended up in the sixth spot with 66 hits.

English, Chiang and Connor finished on top of the Junior Women?s Skeet team podium with a record score of 204 targets. The three teammates broke the previous World Record of 198 targets shot by Russia at the 2007 World Championship in Nicosia, Cyprus.
The Russian team won silver ranking 12 targets behind the U.S., with a total score of 192 targets, while Poland secured the bronze with 191 total hits.

The Junior Women’s Trap team of Molly Bender (Montoursville, Pa.), Brandi Hobbs (Edinboro, Pa.) and Kayle Browning (Wooster, Ark.) earned the bronze medal today, shooting a total of 185 targets.  China won the team competition, shooting a total score of 202 targets and setting a new Junior World Record.  The Spanish team, holder of the record shattered by team China, closed the match in second place, winning the silver with 186 hits.

Individually, Bender finished the highest for the Junior Trap Women with 64 targets to land in 11th place, while Hobbs ended in 15th place with 61 hits and Browning fired 60 targets to finish in 18th place.
The Junior Trap Women?s individual competition was won by the 18-year old Chinese shooter Qi Quiwen with a total score of 69 targets. Xu Tian, also of China, closed the match in second place with a total of 68 +1 hits. Xu shot-off against Rachel Yardy of Great Britain who finished in third place with a total score of 68 +0 targets.
In the Women’s Skeet event, four-time Olympian and 2008 Olympic silver medalist Kim Rhode (El Monte, Calif.) scored the highest finish for the U.S. team, barely missing a spot in the final after losing a shoot-off for sixth place.  Rhode ended in seventh place with 71 total hits.  Haley Dunn (Eddyville, Iowa) finished in 24th place with 64 targets and Jaiden Grinnell (Port Angeles, Wash.) landed in 29th place with 62 hits.

Tactical Solutions PACLITE – The Perfect Competition .22

Do you want the perfect .22 pistol to shoot competitively Both gunsWhether you are just starting out or have been shooting for a long time, there is nothing like the Tactical Solutions PACLITE. This pistol is just fantastic, in fact, AWESOME, doesn’t do it justice. I have seen and shot a lot of .22s over the years. Many of them have cried out, buy me, buy me. The PACLITE screams SHOOT, SHOOT!

This gun is based on the Ruger Mark II or Mark III. To start our project, we first ordered two Ruger Mark IIIs which were covered in Volume 3 Summer 2008 issue of Junior Shooters magazine ? The Ruger Mark III Still # 1. Ruger Mark IIIs blue & stainlessThe Ruger Mark III is an absolutely great pistol and many people use one for shooting .22 steel, .22 rimfire, competitions, plinking and hunting. It is an all around great gun and an excellent packing gun when hiking, fishing, or being in the outdoors.

Red gun only Sarah's hands with gloves it was cold

Tactical Solutions gives the Ruger Mark III even more character and makes it even better with colored grips, colored receiver, fluted barrel, a cool looking compensator, weight reduction, and improved accuracy. These guns shoot! Since they are a little lighter than the original Mark III they are also easier for young juniors to shoot. The compensator helps reduce recoil and muzzle jump so it is easier to keep the sights on the target after each shot. These guns just cry out COOL!

front sights both gunsThe silver flutes on the colored barrel are integrated with the receiver so they are all one piece. The fiberoptic front sight makes picking up the front sight on quick shots fast and smooth. The compensator, which screws off the end of the barrel if you want to reduce over-all length, reduces recoil and adds to the appearance of the firearm.

Each gun comes with a colored fiber optics front sight, a picatinney rail for scope mounting, and a rear sight as part of the rail that is fully adjustable for windage and elevation. The magazine release, safety, grip frame, lower frame, and trigger are the original Ruger Mark III?s components. Blue gun, recoil, flame, Sarah holding gun only

Operation and function is the same as with any Ruger Mark III. I must admit we had a little trigger work done by our gun smith Robert Krone at RK Gunsmithing. He lightened the trigger pull and smoothed it out reducing creep. All of these items ended up making our two PACLITE’s really, really, sweet!

Sarah red gun port armsSarah Bowers (17) says, The Tactical Solutions pistol was my favorite. It gave an amazing group and I was able to shoot it fairly fast without taking extra time in between shots. Aimpoint right side of red gunThere was little recoil, so this pistol would be great for a speed match such as the Steel Challenge.

Tactical Solutions w-scope Dallin right side frontDallin Hixson (15) says, Amazing gun! The PACLITE from tactical Solutions felt perfect in my hands. The balance was better than I could have imagined and the grip was unbeatable! I loved holding this gun. The size was unique, but in a good way! I loved the sights! The sight picture was easy to see and the adjustment was easy to control. I loved the color! It was a very cool red.
(Dallin Hixson  Photo taken using remote camera)

Dallin testing gun for groupsThere was not a lot of recoil though the gun is lighter than the Ruger Mark III. The lack of recoil was not only due to the caliber, .22 Long Rifle (LR), but also due to the compensator at the end of the barrel. Function and performance was very smooth and the slide movement was very slick. I have never had a jam with this gun and it was very easy to operate! The magazine release was placed right at my thumb and was easy to push and release the magazine. This gun is amazingly accurate! A lot of that has to do with the light trigger pull, custom barrel, and sight picture.?

Groups were as low as 0.5 inches at 15-yards.

There are many top notch shooters that prefer the PACLITE from Tactical Solutions. Some of them include: Lena Miculek (Daughter of Kay and Jerry Miculek) and Ashley Bolda (14-years old) both who posted excellent scores in the .22 Rimfire US Steel Nationals this year at Titusville, Florida. Another is Kaci Cochran who shoots both USPSA and Steel and is an outstanding shooter. Both Ashley and Kaci also write for Junior Shooters.

Blue gun left sideWith the 6-inch threaded end silver fluted barrel, receiver, & compensator, the PACLITE’s cost is $350 plus the original cost of the Ruger Mark II or Mark III An adult can actually purchase the set and convert the Ruger Mark III themselves (it requires an Federal Firearms License (FFL) transfer as the receiver has its own serial number.)

Trailite Package with original Browning Buckmark

A similar type system using a Browning Buckmark as the baseline, converts into the Tactical Solutions TRAILITE. This is only a barrel and compensator. The cost for the 5-1/2-inch fluted barrel & compensator is $270. We will be covering the TRAILITE in a separate article a few months from now.

Tri Digital 056Tactical Solutions also carries many other products such as a .22 conversion for the AR-15, barrels, 1911 combo TE on Red STI_edited-12211 conversion kits (1911 with red grips is an STI & below is the conversion set shown with a Kimber 1911,) barrels and stocks, X ring receivers, compensators, grips, components with cool colors, and more!

MGM Targets – Companies Supporting You

Posted By on August 8, 2009

By: Andy FinkWyatt A

Junior shooters are important. Those companies that support you, the junior shooter, are also important. We, at Junior Shooters magazine, refer to a junior shooter as a youth between the ages of five and 21. Various shooting organizations have different age regulations for juniors. There are many organizations that actively support, you, the junior, in one way or another. This may be through donations, products provided, shooting camps, or other means. All of these efforts are deeply appreciated as you are the future of our shooting sports, our hunting heritage, and the protection for our 2nd Amendment: the Right To Keep and Bear Arms.

                                                                                                     (Wyatt Gibson)

                                          (Travis & Wyatt Gibson)

Rhonda & MikeOne of those companies supporting you is MGM Targets owned and operated by Mike and Rhonda Gibson with their son Travis Gibson, daughter-in-law Tracy, and their grandson Wyatt waiting in the wings. All of them are shooters, and darn good ones at that. They shoot mostly United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA,) Steel Challenge, and modern three-gun competitions. MGM Targets manufactures firearms training equipment for military and law enforcement as well as for competitive shooters and shooting clubs. Most people know MGM Targets for their top quality steel rifle and pistol targets, but they also do much larger projects such as turning target systems, high angle shooting/rappelling towers, and live fire shoot houses. They enjoy an exceptional reputation in the industry for quality products, outstanding customer service, and unsurpassed personal and professional integrity.
                                                                                    (Rhonda & Mike Gibson)

Travis, Tracy, & WyattThey donate a percentage of the sales from their paper targets to put on a junior shooting camp each year in conjunction with the USPSA and the United States Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU). The first camp was in October 2008 and had 43 kids attend and was a resounding success. You can read about this in the article titled Who-Ra-ClangClang The Mgm/USAMU Junior Camp on our website at:
https://www.juniorshooters.net/2008/12/28/who-ra-clang-clang-the-mgmusamu-junior-camp/. This is a significant effort by the Gibsons helping many kids receive safe training from our Army experts and champions. The dates for 2009 are November 6-8. Check out www.juniorshooterscamp.org.
         (Travis, Tracy, and Wyatt Gibson)

Travis 3
(Travis showing his expert shooting style)

Last year they decided to start local Steel Challenge matches out at the Nampa outdoor range. This year they are at the Gem County Rod & Gun Club in Emmett, Idaho, www.gcrc.org. These are essentially sponsored and put on by MGM Targets with Travis, and Wyatt setting them up each week and Tracy doing the scoring. MGM Targets built the steel targets and a steel box to keep them in. Mike Gibson openThey also supply all of the two-by-fours. Though there are many people who help set up and take down, Travis, Tracy and Wyatt are the organizers and make sure the matches occur, everyone is safe, and everyone has fun. Start time is 5:00 pm but you can usually get in if you get there by 6:00 or 6:30.

The charge for this is $5 for adults, and juniors and first time shooters are always free. All of the money raised at these matches       (Mike Gibson shooting open class with a red dot on his Glock)
goes right back to the Emmett gun club. I asked Travis to tell me why they are doing this and his reply was: The ONLY reason MGM Targets is putting on the weekly Tuesday night steel matches is to try and grow the action shooting sports. Steel Challenge is an excellent avenue to get new shooters and kids involved. Wyatt's Tactical Solutions 22The stages are easy to figure out and there is very little movement. If the shooter is using a .22 they don’t have to draw from a holster, and it is easy for spectators to see how good a shooter did immediately. They don’t have to go down and look at paper to try and figure out how the shooter did. All of these things combined, make this      (Wyatt?s Tactical Solutions .22 PACLITE built on a Ruger Mark III)
sport a lot of fun for both the shooter and the spectator.

IMG_6164MGM Targets also puts on the MGM Ironman each year which I have heard people say, and personally experienced, is the toughest three-gun competition in the country.

Our thanks go out to the Gibsons and all of the people at MGM Targets for taking the time and the money to support juniors, new shooters, and the shooting sports. It is people like this that make the shooting sports so great.

If you are buying targets or target systems check out MGM Targets for they need our support as well. www.mgmtargets.com.
